Formed in at Fort Bragg, N. Army Col. After WWII, Bank saw a need to organize a mobile, adaptable fighting force that could help foreign nations friendly to the United States.
Special Forces was born. Special Forces Soldiers are trained to perform several missions in a small-team structure. They perform counterinsurgency missions often deployed to prevent terrorist and insurgent incidents abroad.
They also perform unconventional warfare activities conducted to enable resistance movements or insurgencies to coerce, disrupt, or overthrow a government or occupying power by operating through or with an underground, auxiliary, and guerrilla force in a denied area. SF types conduct direct action missions to seize, capture, recover or destroy enemy material, or recover personnel. One of their better-known missions is foreign internal defense where they train and equip foreign allied military forces.
They have also been known to conduct surveillance in hostile, denied, or diplomatically or politically sensitive environments. Lastly, on security force assistance missions, SF soldiers are called upon to train and develop the defense capabilities of friendly and developing nations.
But are the Green Berets the answer to what is the most elite military unit in the US? Army Rangers might argue differently. The Rangers got their start long before the start of the Revolutionary War. In the mids, Capt. Benjamin Church and Maj. Rogers wrote 19 standing order that are still in use today. Rangers can be spotted by their tan berets. A lot of other organizations use this motto, but it is unique to the PJs who got their start in and saw an uptick in missions in Vietnam where they made their name.
PJs are primarily charged with rescuing downed pilots, but they provide advanced life saving medical attention in a variety of missions. They are inserted behind enemy lines and they help with target acquisition on the ground and they provide crucial air support to ground forces. Naturally, they are trained in everything from military freefall parachuting to combat SCUBA diving, as well as SERE, forward air controlling, and other special tactics.
They specialize in calling in air strikes, setting up a landing site and attacking and converting an enemy airfield into a U. The SWAT-like unit is responsible for guarding Naval bases, particularly those in possession of nuclear technology.
All put together, their main job is to assault a well-fortified room and take back U. For good reason — their main mission is complete "deniable" operations.
The Agency can and does recruit from within for these positions, sending Agents through the actual military pipeline to get organically trained agents. Scout Snipers are subject matter experts on identification of high valued targets, visual reconnaissance, and ingress and egress, without detection, from enemy occupied territory. They're not super elite in that the military will use them for raids, but their expertise at recon and shooting high-valued targets in the face puts them squarely into the realm of special operations.
They can be loud and destructive, or quite quiet, as they aid and reinforce SEALs who may or may not be in a particularly nasty situation. Their initial test lasts an incredible 24 days, and that's just to see if you can attend the Green Beret qualification course. Air Force TRFs protect nuclear missile silos. Dubbed "The Nightstalkers," they're a group of upper echelon tactical aviators who support operators on the ground.

Army 'Combined Applications Group'. Force Reconnaissance Marines. US Army Rangers. One documentary team followed a group of potential recruits and saw of them whittled down to 18 in two weeks. It includes one of the best marksmanship schools in the world, weapons handling, airborne courses including HALO jumps, hand-to-hand combat, diving, survival training, and explosive ordnance disposal. These guys are lethal, but they value fire discipline.
Israeli Defense Forces. Since its inception in , Sayeret Matkal has gained a reputation for its deep reconnaissance capabilities and counter-terrorism and hostage recovery missions. They rely on secrecy, attacking in small numbers and in disguise, then fading away before the enemy realizes what happened. One of its most notable operations is perhaps the Entebbe rescue in , when an Air France plane carrying passengers to Paris from Tel Aviv was hijacked by terrorists.
The non-Israeli passengers were released, but hostages remained. The rescue mission took a week to plan and a little over an hour to execute. The disguised task force was airlifted in with Land Rovers and a Mercedes-Benz. They managed to infiltrate the local army, kill the terrorists, and rescue all but four of the hostages. Only one Israeli soldier was killed in the attack.
