The first half of the book was a bit of a slow burn, recapping and building for what was to come later. It felt like it wasn't really going anywhere for quite a while, which made it hard to engage with. As with the other parts, there's a lot of action towards the end. By the last page, some major developments have occurred. Although one very big change happens at the end, overall it doesn't feel like much of the story-line has been resolved.
This has some key parts of the series in it, but as a book it lacks its own particular story and is more of a bridge. The Sixth book in the HON series really dragged on. Not sure why I am still buying these books because I don't enjoy them. I guess somehow that Casts still have me wanting to know what happens, but I imagine soon I won't care.
This book did not get rave reviews - in fact most that I have read really said they could have done without it. I have to disagree. The series is finally starting to move. There was hardly any retelling or explaining in this installment. I do see how annoying it must have been to folks who were reading each one as they were published as this is definitely a piece of the story from the middle But overall, I liked it; I think it moved the plot along; and I am eager to begin 7. My mid-book impressions of this book stayed pretty much accurate throughout the last half, too.
Sometimes characters had great moments of sounding like their old and realistic selves, but other times they seemed to be just cardboard cutouts of themselves. Like they were actually reduced to stereotypes and stopped being actual characters at all. Aphrodite got much more shallow and vacuous overnight, Stevie Rae became more countrified, Erin and Shaunee became stereotyped teenage girls who giggle at silly things All things they did before, yes, but now it seems that's about all their is to them, and it was a big disappointment.
The changing point of view continued to be annoying, although it served a greater purpose later on than in the beginning. Most of the book still took place from Zoey's perspective, still in the same first-person voice I got comfortably used to in the earlier books,. They would give important information and detail important events, but they still didn't fit as well into the story. It took me far longer to finish this book than I wanted it to, because I was so very bored through most of it.
Maybe I've just been reading the others so much that I burned myself out of them, or maybe this one really was a deal-breaker, but either way, I'm going to have a nice long break from the series before I tackle the next book. I'm afraid I can't recommend this one to anyone but die-hard fans of the series, and yes, I'm aware that saying that about the sixth book of a series is pretty pointless.
If you made it this far, you may as well keep going. But I can't say you'll enjoy it. Imporant things happens, but the majority of the book felt like filler, dull and unappetizing. The ending, I admit, is quite exciting and interesting, but when you have to go through an entire book to find about 10 pages of seriously heavy and intense action, the awesomeness of the ending is so heavily tempered with disappointment that even that doesn't inspire me to pick up the next one in a hurry.
Definitely taking a break from the series. I literly put that book down about two and a half seconds ago and actually pretty much threw it as I closed the last page. I am extremely disappointed in this book. It tells the reader basically nothing they didn't know before, it felt like filler, nothing but words to fill up the empty space between books. It was entertaining and an ok story but it did absolutely nothing for the plot of the series.
I mean I know she isn't dead but that was unnecessary. Then as it progressed, the book was mainly nothing more that Zoey arguing about her boyfriends, the same as the last book, and then doing one or two things here and there. I fell in love with this series from Marked and I really think this book is what killed it for me, I might re-read it and try again, or I might hang up my hat and not continue on with Zoey Redbird's boyfriend misadventures.
Zoey's confusion about Kalona comes to a peak in this book when the group of kids bands together and chases him and Neferat to the ancient seat of power in the vampyre world, you guessed it, Italy! With the help of Aphrodite's visions, Stevie Ray's pack of red fledglings, and Erik's Zoey her friends, including the ever human Heath, head overseas to stop Kalona and Neferat from declaring themselves Nyx incarnate and her consort and taking over the Vampyre world in order to start a war against the humans!
But Zoey's not so sure that Kalona is all bad. Her hesitation ends when she is called by her imprint to Heath just in time to see Kalona kill him. Too late to save him, Zoey throws her whole spirit at him and he falls from the cliff. A thrilling continuation of the previous 5, and I am looking forward to the next book! I have to say I really liked this book although the ending has left me a little confused.
By far the best plot line is that of Stevie Rae and Raphaim, he is very likable in his own weird way. I think and hope the shifting perspectives is the authors way of preparing to take books in a different direction, not focusing on Zoey so much. I just finished reading Tempted by P. It is the sixth book in the House Of Night series. They are met by disaster, injury, distrust, and hatred. While Neferet and Kalona may be banished, their influence on many of the people seems to have stuck with them.
Zoey realizes she must destroy Kalona in order to fully return House Of Night to its natural order. I really loved this book. Its my second time reading it. I'm re-reading this entire series in honor of the new book that came out in October. I'm glad I am. This series as a whole has managed to captivate my attention and leave me hooked and begging for more. I tend to stay loyal to the books that do that for me.
They also stick with me longer than any other book. The only thing I really didn't like about this book was that unlike the first five books, this book is written in more than one perspective. This normally wouldn't be a problem. I'm sure there is a purpose for it that there wasn't in previous books. However, it seems that the multiple view points can be confusing, especially when using two different points of view.
For Zoey, they use first person, and for everybody else they use third person. Darius hurried after the nun, with Aphrodite following him. The warrior glanced over his shoulder at me. Aren't you coming with us, Zoey?
As soon as I can. Before I could deal with Erik and Heath, from behind me a familiar twang saved the day. Go on with Darius and Aphrodite, Z. I'll take care of Dumb and Dumber and be sure there's no booger monsters left out here. I turned and hugged her quickly, loving how reassuringly solid and normal she felt.
Actually, she seemed so normal that I got a weird twinge when she stepped back and grinned at me and I saw, as if for the first time, the scarlet tattoos that spread out from the filled-in crescent in the middle of her forehead and down either side of her face. A sliver of unease threaded through me. Misunderstanding my hesitation, she said, Don't worry about these two dorks.
I'm gettin' used to jerking them apart. When I just stood there staring at her, the bright smile she'd been wearing dimmed. Hey, you know your grandma's okay, right? Kramisha got her back inside right after Kalona was banished and Sister Mary Angela just told me she was goin' inside to check on her.
Yeah, I remember Kramisha helping her into the wheelchair. I'm just. My voice trailed off. I was just what? How could I put into words that I was haunted by a feeling that everything wasn't right with my best friend and the group of kids she'd allied herself with, and how do I say that to my best friend?
You're just tired and worried 'bout a bunch of stuff, Stevie Rae said softly. Was that understanding I saw flicker through her eyes? Or was it something else, something darker? I get it, Z, and I'll take care of things out here. You just be sure Stark's okay. She hugged me again, and then gave me a little push in the direction of the abbey. Thanks, I said lamely, starting toward the abbey and totally ignoring the two dorks who were standing there staring at me.
Stevie Rae called after me, Hey, remind Darius or someone to keep an eye on the time. It's only about an hour until sunrise, and you know me and all the red fledglings gotta be inside out of the sun by then. Yeah, no problem. I'll remember, I said. The problem was it was getting harder and harder for me to forget Stevie Rae wasn't what she used to be.
