At this stage, the bottom of the hair follicle the bulb is attached to the dermis and its blood supply through the dermal papilla. Catagen — the transition phase. The hair follicle begins to die and enters the catagen phase. Telogen — the resting phase. In this phase, the remains of the hair bulb are inactive and the attached hair easily falls out. Laser hair removal works because the light of the laser beam can be converted to heat.
The light is attracted to the pigment melanin in the hair. Dark pigment absorbs the light and the converts it to heat. The heat then affects the hair follicles to prevent hair growth. In order to destroy a hair follicle, the bulb of the hair follicle where the blood supplies the hair with oxygen to grow needs to be destroyed as well as the stem cells which are responsible for hair regeneration.
To be able to do this, a temperature of about 70 degrees needs to be reached. The darker and the thicker a hair is the more pigment it will hold, and the more light it will absorb. So to recap, what happens is that the light is emitted, is then absorbed by the pigment in the hair, travels through the hair and is converted to heat and destroys the root.
That hair is destroyed and does not grow back! Only hairs in the growing stage hairs that are in the anagen phase can be treated successfully, however not all hairs grow at the same time.
This is why a course of treatments is required to get the different hairs as they enter the growing stage. Treatments are every 8 weeks for the body and 4 weeks for the face. Secondly, only hair that has pigment can be treated. After the first few zaps, I squirm so much Dr. Weiser has to stop.
It feels like someone is taking a lit match to my leg and holding it up close. The darker the hair, she explains, the coarser it is; therefore more energy is emitted onto that follicle, causing greater discomfort. But Dr. Weiser is calm and methodical, her laser moving up and down the leg in straight lines. The noise of the pulses is like the beat of a metronome or a very fast elevator that beeps at every floor. On my second visit, I remove my silk blouse in order to avoid unnecessary dry cleaning.
But with each subsequent visit, it gets progressively easier, partly because I am becoming more used to the process and partly because there is less hair to zap. Nearly half a million laser treatments were performed by dermatological surgeons in the last year that collected data is available according to the American Society for Dermatological Surgery, so it must be worth the minor suffering. Most people who get laser treatments are focusing on smaller areas of hair—underarm, upper lip, bikini line.
These areas also happen to be much more sensitive: The very idea of getting my bikini line. These areas also happen to be much more sensitive. The lower leg, on the other hand, is one of the largest areas that they laser and it takes about 25 minutes altogether for both legs upon each visit.
As the leading manufacturer of light-based technology, Astanza provides the latest, most innovative laser hair removal systems that are trusted by the top hair removal providers nationwide.
While different light-based technologies are used to remove hair, all treatments are alike. During a treatment session, bright flashes of light are emitted onto the unwanted hair. The light penetrates through the skin and selectively targets the melanin in the hair follicles.
The pigment absorbs the light energy, effectively destroying the hair. Depending on the size of the handpiece being used, multiple hairs can be treated simultaneously. Multiple sessions are necessary to target the hair follicles during their growth stage. Most patients need at least 4 to 6 treatments to see permanent, long-lasting results. Touch-ups may be required over time. Patients should see results after the first treatment — their hairs will grow back finer and weaker and the skin will become smoother.
Results will become more noticeable and impressive with each additional treatment until all follicles are destroyed, successfully stopping continuous hair growth. Women and men alike are very likely to get laser hair removal.
